Sample variance of the cosmic velocity field

چکیده

Since the cosmic peculiar velocity field depends on small wave-number modes strongly, we cannot probe its universal properties unless we observe a sufficiently large region. We calculate the expected deviation (sample variance) of the peculiar velocity dispersion from its universal value in the case observed volume is finite. Using linear theory we show that the sample variance remains as large as ∼ 10%, even if the observed region is as deep as 100h−1Mpc and that it seriously affects the estimation of cosmological parameters from the peculiar velocity field. Variance of the Higher - Order Cumulants of Cosmic Density and Velocity Fields

If primordial fluctuation is Gaussian distributed, higher-order cumulants of the cosmic fields reflect nonlinear mode coupling and provide useful information of gravitational instability picture of structure formation. We show that their expected deviation (sample variance) from the universal values is nonvanishing even in linear theory in the case where observed volume is finite. As a result, ...

Cosmic Momentum Field and Mass Fluctuation Power Spectrum

We introduce the cosmic momentum field as a new measure of the large-scale peculiar velocity and matter fluctuation fields. The momentum field is defined as the peculiar velocity field traced and weighted by galaxies, and is equal to the velocity field in the linear regime. We show that the radial component of the momentum field can be considered as a scalar field with the power spectrum which ...

Power Spectrum of Cosmic Momentum Field Measured from the Sfi Galaxy Sample

We have measured the cosmic momentum power spectrum from the peculiar velocities of galaxies in the SFI sample. The SFI catalog contains field spiral galaxies with radial peculiar velocities derived from the I-band Tully-Fisher relation. As a natural measure of the large-scale peculiar velocity field, we use the cosmic momentum field that is defined as the peculiar velocity field weighted by lo...

Velocity fields in non–Gaussian cold dark matter models

We analyse the large–scale velocity field obtained by N–body simulations of cold dark matter (CDM) models with non–Gaussian primordial density fluctuations, considering models with both positive and negative primordial skewness in the density fluctuation distribution. We study the velocity probability distribution and calculate the dependence of the bulk flow, one–point velocity dispersion and ...

Gaussianity of Cosmic Velocity Fields and Linearity of the Velocity – Gravity Relation

We present a numerical study of the relation between the cosmic peculiar velocity field and the gravitational acceleration field. We show that on mildly non-linear scales (4–10 hMpc Gaussian smoothing), the distribution of the Cartesian coordinates of each of these fields is well approximated by a Gaussian. In particular, their kurtoses and negentropies are small compared to those of the veloci...
